I think there are enough replies, I can safely voice my opinions now. And starcraft 2 will always lack that due to it coming after the golden ages and the many balance changes over the years.īoth my favourite games of all time and I hope there will be more amazing RTS to come. You’re just never going to ‘get’ that context if you weren’t there for it. Theres a certain nostalgia about brood war being the first real RTS that was so deeply and intensely analysed and we got to see so many amazing players and meta game shifts over the years.

Sc2 is visually incredible even for its age and I’ve had many friends and family enjoy watching it with absolutely no idea how to play the game.īut.

In terms of campaign both are fun, the story and writing in sc1 is way, way better, there’s no argument there but the missions in sc2 campaign are fun as well.ġv1 professional scene for a newcomer is going to be a point to sc2, brood war is going to be difficult to follow if you don’t understand the game. The quality of life improvements over brood war (and lack of brood wars team ladder) have me going back to sc2 more than bw despite growing up with brood war. In general, you’re going to prefer sc2 if you’ve never played an old gen RTS. If you do want to do it I think you can make arguments in both directions, but I would suggest to start with SC2 with the same reason as for single player, just in reverse: SC1 is more finnicky and in multiplayer if you want to rank up at all you have to deal with that at least a bit, I'd imagine learning the basis of the game with SC2 is easier and then you can more focus on the SC1 specific stuff when you jump into that. They are pretty different games and personally I prefer being decent at one game rather than being mediocre at both. Or do you mean multiplayer? Much harder to answer, for one it isn't really "necessary" or even makes that much sense to necessary play both in multiplayer. Looking for something to play single player? I don't think it makes a huge difference, I'd probably play SC1 first and then go for SC2, just because you might otherwise miss some of the QoL changes if you do it the other way around, also that way the story probably makes more sense, multiple returning characters, continuing storylines, etc.
